The spotlight was on Brad Keselowski at Martinsville Sunday as the veteran buckled into the BuildSubmarines.com Ford Mustang for his 600th career start. Showing the knowledge learned over the course of the previous 599, Keselowski steadily carved his way through the field in Stage One. Finding a rhythm, turning consistent laps running the bottom groove, he steadily moved from his 23rd starting position toward the front. By the end of the segment, he had gained seven positions.
Between stages, Keselowski said he was able to exit the turns with authority but rolling the center of the tight half mile was a bit challenging. Crew chief Jeremy Bullins took notice and made adjustments at the break. After restarting 17th, Keselowski once again showcased his ability to manage traffic and was able to maximize long run speed, advancing into the top 15. By the end of the stage, he was 13th.
The stage break brought pitstops, and adversity. Keselowski’s front tire changer fought through obstacles after getting his foot tangled in a competing team’s air hose when they swung their hose inadvertently into the No. 6 team’s pit box. That became a blip on the radar as Keselowski persevered. Throughout the final stage, the two-time Martinsville winner continued to push. He mounted a late charge, slicing through the field in the closing laps, finishing 13th in what was a milestone day for the 2012 champ.
“A real blue-collar day,” said Keselowski. “We need to qualify better; we need to have better restarts and need to have a little bit better day on pit road too to be able to win. But we fought really hard to get what we got and dug out of some holes.”
